5 myths about starting martial arts as an adult

Every week someone tells us why they "can't" start. Here are the five we hear most — and why none of them hold up. (This is sample article text — replace with your own.)

1. "I'm too old"

Our adult mats run from uni students to people in their sixties. You progress at your own pace, and the only person you're competing with is the version of you from last month.

2. "I need to get fit first"

This is like cleaning the house before the cleaner arrives. The classes get you fit — that's the point. You start where you are.

3. "Everyone will be better than me"

Everyone was a first-timer once, and they remember it. Beginners are looked after, partnered carefully, and never thrown in the deep end.

4. "I'm not coordinated"

Coordination is a skill, not a gift. It's literally what training builds. Six weeks in, you won't recognise yourself.

5. "I don't have time"

Most members train two or three times a week and call it the best hour of their day. Start with one class and see.
